Stratford-Upon-Avon – Tour Guides: Report from Colin Avern, Chair of Reaside Academy LGB
13th February 2017
On Monday 23rd January, I was able to spend the whole day with pupils and staff from Reaside Academy on a school visit to Stratford-Upon-Avon, Shakespeare’s Birthplace.
Whilst all of the children were able to experience the sights and sounds of both Shakespeare’s Birthplace and the new visitor attraction, New Place; I spent most of my time with the children who
had been selected to act as tour guides. These children all undertook their task as tour guides with great commitment and enthusiasm and I saw children talking to, and explaining their particular subject, to visitors from as far away as Australia, Japan and the Philippines.
As Chair of the Local Governing Body, I talked to several representatives from the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and they all spoke very highly of all of the children, complementing them on their knowledge of Shakespeare and of the way that they presented themselves. They also commented on how confidently the children spoke when questioned by both visitors and their classmates.
The visit involved the children moving around Stratford amongst the shoppers and visitors and their behaviour throughout was exemplary. They should be justifiably proud of the fantastic way
that they represented Reaside Academy. My visit with the school last Monday reinforced last November’s Ofsted rating of Reaside Academy being a good school.
Hopefully you will join me in congratulating both the staff and the children on a brilliant day which I am sure that the children not only enjoyed but also learnt a lot from….I know that I did!!
